National Rail Enquiries

Good afternoon everybody, apologies for the length of time between posts, I’ve been in India visiting our Contact Centres and have been on my summer holiday.

Whilst I’ve been away the team have been busy making some further changes to the website.  Where journeys are planned that include crossing London our journey planner now takes account of engineering work occurring on the London Underground.  We’re working on some major changes at the moment which if all goes to plan will be available next month to enable you to plan journeys to and from London Underground Zone 1 and Docklands Light Railway stations.

Local Bus MapWe’ve reintroduced bus maps into the station pages of the website.  Simply search for your station and then select “Local area maps” from the menu on the right.

Talking of maps – our Information Team conducting some research on behalf of the rail industry into how rail maps look and how passengers use them.  If you’re interested in maps, why not sign up for one of our focus groups being held in London and Manchester?  Places are being snapped up fast, so you’ll have to be quick!

Finally, if you’re travelling on the railway this bank holiday weekend, take a look at our travel summary which explains what engineering work is going on where.

  1. Local maps are a great idea, I trust the concept will be developed further. The bus routes on my local station show travel back to points along the rail line rather than onward destinations not served by train.

  2. Good morning

I travelled on the Basingstoke to Waterloo train, joining it at Winchfield at 0804 hrs on Wednesday 25 August. I want to commend the guard on duty for my journey for his calm and well planned customer focussed announcements. He bought a smile to my face and other travellers I observed. I failed to get his name but did thank him at the end of my journey at Waterloo. I wanted to ensure that my comments reached his line manager, hence my email.

    Thank you for the opportunity.
    Regards

    Barry

  3. What’s happened to the departure/arrivals boards suddenly this week? I’m looking at them in at almost noon and it says Last updated: 17:58 and shows no trains for any station. And isn’t it possible to see all departures and arrivals from a station now?

    • Hi Brian

Arrivals or departures has to be done separately, but you should be able to see trains for the stations. Are you still having a problem? If so, email me with the stations you’re having a problem with at nre[dot]lisa[at]googlemail[dot]com (replace with the correct punctuation!).

      Cheers
      Lisa

  4. Dear Mr Scroggins

I have recently returned to live in my hometown of Ipswich.

I use the rail station regularly but still notice there is no easily visible clock in the main entrance and ticket office. Instead we have a useless large photo of a local footballer in a messianic pose!

Please can we have a large clock in this room about the ticket counter or above the entrance to the platform. Perhaps a clock outside would also be useful.

    Best wishes

    James

  5. Finally, some good news about the journey planner. I have recently found how useful it is, when I plan my trips around southern UK. Thanks !!!
